2011: The Year of Latina Smart

As this year is coming to an end, I wanted to share more about my involvment with the Latina Smart Scholarship Fund contest. You might remember that I posted about the contest when it began and since then, I had the great pleasure of reading each and every entry to help narrow down the list to 20 young women.

I don’t really want to use the word “judging” because each of the women who applied for the scholarship were incredibly smart and hard-working women. As I read through the entries I cried, laughed and beamed at the incredible hardships some had overcome and the amazing drive and determination they all had to improve their lives through education.

Each and every one of them absolutely lived up to the words: LATINA SMART!

After myself and the rest of the Latina Smart ambassadors rated each entry, the contest coordinators tallied up all of our ratings and announced the Top 20. Those ladies who are in the Top 20 can be viewed here.

As excited as I am for the next round of judging and the final announcement of who the winners are, I can honestly say that I am glad the final choice isn’t based on my vote. If I had millions, I’d have given each applicant a piece. :-)

The Latina Smart scholarship contest is incredible and I am so thankful to have been a part of the process. I was honored and humbled by the stories I read and videos I watched.

To all the women that entered: YOU ARE LATINA SMART and YOU ARE AMAZING!

This scholarship contest is incredible and was even nominated for a LATISM Award for the “Best Multicultural Social Media Campaign”. You can check it out here and see the other amazing nominees.

For all those on the edges of their seats, you can keep up with the contest and see who the winners are on the LS Facebook Page.

“Keep calm and Latina on!” Be #LatinaSmart

Although my Summer was busy and transitioning to Fall has been hectic, I recently was the recipient of some wonderful news! I am so incredibly excited to share that I have been selected as one of 5 ambassadors for Latina Smart.

I was first introduced to Latina Smart at the LATISM Party at BlogHer ’11. The swag bags from the event were cute canvas bags with the “Ambitious and Delicious” motto on the side. As soon as I read it, I thought…It’s so perfect! We are an ambitious and delicious bunch!

The other fabulous ladies who are also Latina Smart Ambassadors are:

1)  Candy at Mommypalooza
2)  Jessie at Hecho Para Mamá and Tech Savvy Tips
3)  Tracy at Acending Butterfly
4) Monica at Monica Wants It

The Latina Smart community on Facebook is a diverse and spunky group of gals who share and inspire each other. We value improving our lives and being educated, strong women! Latinas come in many shapes, shades and sizes…all of them beautiful!

Being selected as a Latina Smart Ambassador is such an incredible honor! The most incredible part of this process is that the Ambassadors will be a part of the judging process for Latina Smart’s Scholarship Contest.

The Latina Smart Fund, powered by Kmart, is awarding $25,000 in scholarships to students! Share what makes you Latina Smart, submit your entry and you couldWIN one of three $5,000 scholarships or the Grand Prize – $10,000 towards your education.

Check out more information and submit your entry here.

If you know someone who you think should enter…share this post with them!

You can submit your entry in the form of a 750-1,000 word essay or a 2 minute video describing what makes YOU Latina Smart.

A 2 minute video to win $5,000 or $10,000?! ….entering would be so Latina Smart of you!

Enchanted Fun with the #PaperdollProject

Today my outfit was styled by the lovely Elle of ElleEnchanted.com

The Paper Doll Project is a fantastic concept where one blogger gets paired up with another blogger and they style an item from each other’s wardrobe.

I asked Elle to style this black top. My mom brought it back for me after her annual trip to England last year and I haven’t worn it at all! I thought this would be the perfect time.

Elle suggested that I pair it with a skirt, Summer heels/wedges and funky accessories.

(That ring is shaped like a giraffe. That’s pretty “funky” right?) ;)

So…here’s what I’ve got!

I honestly never would have thought to wear this shirt with a skirt. I always envisioned it with some wide-leg pants or skinny jeans.

You can check out more Paper Doll outfits and pairings here.
