Better Late than Never … a #BlogHer11 Recap

So here I am 2 weeks after the BlogHer conference writing a recap. In a way, maybe it’s better because the moments and memories I reference now are the ones that most left an impression.

After arriving home on Sunday following the conference, I hit Google and searched to see what over-achievers had already posted BlogHer recaps. I read posts from people who had an AMAZING time, to people who complained about feeling insignificant or otherwise irritated. The way I see it, you can have a good time or not. It’s up to YOU! I went to BlogHer by myself and although I had friends there, I spent most of my time finding new people to meet and yes, occasionally…alone. *Let’s suck it up alright?!*

So…here’s a brief recap (and yes…I’m leaving out tons but only because it would be waaaay too much to write and you wouldn’t read it all anyway. be honest….you wouldn’t.) :p

Thursday was BlogHer eve, and iFabbo hosted an incredible event at San Diego’s Robert Cromeans salon. iFabbo members were treated to CND Shellac manicures, makeup by Stila and hair styling by the talented stylists at Robert Cromeans.

stylists at Robert Cromeans San DiegoIt takes teamwork to tame this mane! They made me look FAB!

The entire conference was amazing! Aside from the incredible conference sessions, the Expo Hall at BlogHer ’11 was enormous! There was so much to see, so many fun things to try and great people to be met.

Oh yeah, and swag!

Eden Fantasy’s was giving out goodie bags with toys in them, and since one of my BlogHer roomies is known as the SEXucator we had a little “proper usage” pow-wow and probably the best definition of “taint” that I’ve ever heard!

There were so many private parties held this year (although I’ve heard that in past years there were more). I went to a few including the Cheap Sally Party, the Secret Style Suite and the iFabbo event on Thursday night but I didn’t want to get carried away because I really love meeting new people! I went to nearly every Official BlogHer party aside from Queerosphere (which I’m sorely bummed that I missed).

The verdict? Lady bloggers may be geeks but we know how to PARTY!

I am in the mood to make a list, so here are my BlogHer ’11 Recap Lists:

PEOPLE I AM AWESOMER AFTER MEETING BECAUSE THEIR AWESOMENESS RUBBED OFF ON ME:

@AnythingLime || I met Whitney on the dance floor at the CheeseburgHER party. We were dancing in a group & she told me I looked fabulous. [Um, for the record...if you're trying to start a friendship with me. This is the way.] :)  This girl is a ray of sunshine! I love positiveness!

@TheMakeupGirl || Yes, THE Makeup Girl! We met outside on Saturday night and she glam-ed me out with her shade of MAC’s Bloggers Obsession called “Hocus Pocus”. …the shadow is beautiful and so is Lianne! We had such a fun chat and she was such a sweetheart. You WILL see me rockin’ Hocus Pocus.

@MummyTime || The first thing Brenda said when we met was: “I’m Brenda, I kick ass!” You cannot argue with that because this woman is a social media powerhouse and even cooler?! She’s an Aussie!

@TheChattyMomma || I’m pretty sure Tonia and I were separated at birth. This girl is awesome and I’m pretty sure we just met in passing in the Expo Hall and ended up chatting for a good 30 minutes. She’s spunky, smart and yes…awesome!

PEOPLE WHO INSPIRED ME:

@LudmillaRossi || Blogger, social media maven & entrepreneur who came to BlogHer from Brasil! I have taken that 22 hour fligh before and it’s about as much fun as a 22 hour flight can be (not much). She and I spoke, and somewhere between my broken Portuguese and her English (which was better than my Portuguese) we became instant friends! The view of bloggers in Brasil is very different than here and social media is just now ’catching on’. Her long trip inspired me. :)

@BarbSobel || When Barb told me she blogs about adoption, I felt an instant connection being that I am adopted. Then she told me that she was the birth mother. I told Barb about a million times how incredible and strong she is. (I only said half of them out-loud so as not to sound crazy but long-story-short…she rocks!)

@FatemehF  || I waited after hearing Fatemeh speak during the keynote talk with Ricki Lake and Carol Jenkins. She’s an Iranian-American author and editor of Muslimah Media Watch. She’s young and she will change the world!

With all this said…I have missed writing these past weeks y’all, but I have been mentally gone. School just started back up so I’m getting myself in gear and I’ve got some greatness coming up soon.
Oh! In case you hadn’t heard, I launched a new collaborative site for San Diego gals. Stop by, join up and connect at Young. Chic. San Diego.

Enjoy your week!

XOXO,

P.S. – What do you think of the new digs?

Getting ready for #BlogHer11 | Must-Haves and Must-Do’s

Must-Haves:

Charge Anywhere : iGo Mobile Phone Charger

Admittedly I don’t own one of these…yet! I definitely plan on getting one, because if you plan on Tweeting and uploading live from BlogHer you’re going to need to maintain your battery.

At BlogWorld last year, my phone was in a constant state of battery crisis and across the conference area one could see people plugged into walls (and sitting on the floor) with their phones and laptops.

I met 2 smart gals on the way to a party who had their phones in their purses plugged into their iGo chargers. [Genius!]

You just charge the charger in the wall, and use it as a usb mobile charger wherever you are! I will absolutely have one at BlogHer because I don’t want to be stuck charging my phone somewhere…I’ve gotta get in on the fun!

A cute cocktail dress.

Yes!

Permission to Shop: GRANTED.

There will be all kinds of fabulous parties at BlogHer this year, and a wardrobe change   from your conference day outfit will be essential.

Candace at Fashionably Organized has a great “What to Wear to BlogHer” post you   should totally check out if you’re wondering what to pack.

:)

Must-Do:

Put your FACE on your business card!

Yes…your face! At conferences especially, you’ll meet so many individuals in the course of each day and exchange your business cards with others and at the end of the weekend when you’re back home it’s nice to put a face with a name.

It helps you to remember that person better and any interesting conversations or experiences you had with them.

(This takes me into the next Must-Do which is…)

Hand out your business cards selectively.

Business cards are expensive (especially if you’ve put in a lot of work/money for the design).  It’s been said before and I definitely agree that you should only give out your card when you feel like it’s relevant.

Don’t just say “Hi, here’s my card.” Talk to the person, get to know their niche or area of expertise and if exchanging cards would be beneficial to either or both of you…by all means go for it!

I’m not saying you should flat out deny someone your business card. (Lol)

If you work with or own multiple companies, create a central homepage!

About.Me is a free and easy way to create a personal “hub” that provides information and can direct people to all of your outlets and websites.

Do you QR? …you should!

<—That is a QR code (I’m sure you’ve seen them around.) They’re easily made for any link, photo, document or other. I use the QRDroid App to create mine, and all you’ve got to do is scan it with a QR code reader. I have 2 on my business card. One linking to my personal site and another to my professional network on BeKnown.

I’m sure you’ll see them on lots of business cards at BlogHer!

…and last but not least…

Make NEW Friends

Conferences are great for reinforcing friendships, but of course we cannot forget to engage and meet new people as well!

I cannot wait to meet new friends and experience BlogHer for the first time!
